Diane Arbus Style

10.6.2011
I see a disgusted man grasping a pole, glancing abnormally in the distance with dry brush surrounding him. The way his lips are formed makes the picture seem a bit off. He is a bit hunched over which disguises his lanky figure. It is a simple concrete portrait.
The photo is intentionally in focus so you can see his figure and facial expression clearly. The tone of the picture is indifferent and blunt.
The image was shot outdoors in bright light, but was darkened. Once the subject is dark, it carries a more subtle, blank tone.
In my opinion, I feel like this picture was semi successful because it carries a bit awkward subtleness but at the same time looks a little normal.

Irving Penn Style

9.30.2011
I see a vintage romance. The closeness of the wineglass emphasizes the maturity of the subjects. The way the people are in the background and out of focus makes the observer feel like they aren't meant to be there, like they are a fly on the wall, seeing something they aren't suppose to see. It is a concrete photo that displays the story it is trying to tell.
The wine glass is there because it exaggerates the figure of the lady's neck and head. Her neck is elongated and skinny. It comes off as a little awkward but mature at the same time. The intention was for the people in the back to be more in focus than the wine glass portrayed in the front of the photo. This is the opposite of the original photo in order to mix things up a little. The lighting is quite bright.
The original photo was taken in a dark setting to establish the "romantic" mood. However, my photo was taken in brightness, to highlight their youth, but their belief in mature romance. My objective was to portray vintage romance and maturity. This picture was taken indoors in front of a white screen.
I think this picture was quite successful. The focus of the lady in the wineglass didn't turn out as clear as I imagined it to be, but the way her neck was stretched was on point. The lighting wasn't as dark as I would have liked it to be, but the accidental brightness of the photo actually complimented my point in the whole subject. I feel like I did a pretty good job and I'm proud of it.
