Art Show Photo

12. 7.2011

In this photo, Athena is holding a picture of Jennifer holding a picture of Breyane holding a picture of I. Athena is up close, but everyone else in the picture is far away.
The image was taken intentionally in focus so the objects of the picture could be seen. The pictures within the picture were cropped and edited inside the other pictures with Photoshop. The contrast of the picture benefits the idea of the subjects standing out.
This picture is communicating a different and interesting way to see photography instead of the typical portrait. It is just a picture that it visually appealing to the eyes. The image was taken outdoors on the side of a house. It is bright so that the subjects can be seen.
To me, this piece was successful because we were able to capture what we were trying to portray and it came out the way we had it planned in our minds.

Series

11.17.2011
I see three different girls holding a printed photo of another girl's facial feature. On the very left column, Athena, the very first one, has the eyes of Breyane, the second girl. Breyane has the nose of the next girl, Jennifer. Lastly, Jennifer has the feature of Athena. On the very right column of the picture, are the head shots of the girls with their complete facial features. These pictures were taken up close. It is a figurative picture.
The tone of the pictures on the left column are unhappy because they are seen with someone else's feature. To emphasize this tone, the color of the pictures are on a black and white scale. On the other side, the tone of the pictures are happy. To emphasize this point, the pictures are in color. I darkened the lighting of the picture and increased the contrast by a bit. Originally, the photos in the photos of the left column were blank white pieces of paper. I photoshopped and cropped the individual features from the pictures on the right onto the pieces of paper. The images are in intentionally in focus.
I juxtaposed the series by each girl with what they would look like with someone else's feature and their natural features. I did this to exaggerate the point that everyone looks perfect the way they already are, and that if they had someone's else's facial feature, they would not look like themselves. These pictures were taken indoors, with the strobe and black background.
I believe my work was successful because it came out better than the way I had wanted it to. The lighting and complexion of the pictures are on point.

The Truth

11.11.2011
I see a girl sitting down, reading a book. There are trees in the background, and little yellow glowing twinkling stars surrounding her as she reads. There is sunshine shining on her, but with gloomy skies.
The tone of the picture is enchanting and like a fantasy. The image is intentionally focused with the background blurred out. The contrast of the picture is lower than normal and the brightness is higher. The exposure is also higher than normal.
The truth is, Hannah loves to read. Ever since she was little, reading has always been a part of her and something she would do on her spare time. When she reads, she becomes absorbed in the book, all her problems go away, and nothing else matters. The glowing yellow stars are photoshopped all over her to express the book coming to life. The lighting of the picture is very bright and light to portray the setting of the fantasy she is reading. It was taken outdoors on a field.
I feel as if my work was pretty successful because I was able to capture her doing what she loves. Also, it was very accurate to what I pictured the photo to be in my head.

Diane Arbus Style

10.6.2011
I see a disgusted man grasping a pole, glancing abnormally in the distance with dry brush surrounding him. The way his lips are formed makes the picture seem a bit off. He is a bit hunched over which disguises his lanky figure. It is a simple concrete portrait.
The photo is intentionally in focus so you can see his figure and facial expression clearly. The tone of the picture is indifferent and blunt.
The image was shot outdoors in bright light, but was darkened. Once the subject is dark, it carries a more subtle, blank tone.
In my opinion, I feel like this picture was semi successful because it carries a bit awkward subtleness but at the same time looks a little normal.

Irving Penn Style

9.30.2011
I see a vintage romance. The closeness of the wineglass emphasizes the maturity of the subjects. The way the people are in the background and out of focus makes the observer feel like they aren't meant to be there, like they are a fly on the wall, seeing something they aren't suppose to see. It is a concrete photo that displays the story it is trying to tell.
The wine glass is there because it exaggerates the figure of the lady's neck and head. Her neck is elongated and skinny. It comes off as a little awkward but mature at the same time. The intention was for the people in the back to be more in focus than the wine glass portrayed in the front of the photo. This is the opposite of the original photo in order to mix things up a little. The lighting is quite bright.
The original photo was taken in a dark setting to establish the "romantic" mood. However, my photo was taken in brightness, to highlight their youth, but their belief in mature romance. My objective was to portray vintage romance and maturity. This picture was taken indoors in front of a white screen.
I think this picture was quite successful. The focus of the lady in the wineglass didn't turn out as clear as I imagined it to be, but the way her neck was stretched was on point. The lighting wasn't as dark as I would have liked it to be, but the accidental brightness of the photo actually complimented my point in the whole subject. I feel like I did a pretty good job and I'm proud of it.
